Paragon Machine Works | Frame builder parts & 3D validation
Richmond, Californie, United States · ~10 employees · CNC subcontracting for frame builders
Visit: October 25, 2024 · Contact: Calvin Norstad
Context & positioning
Paragon Machine Works is a subcontractor specialized in small parts for frame builders: head tubes, derailleur hangers, cable routing. The workshop is divided into a turning zone and a milling zone. Very high machine density for the available floor space. Founded by Calvin’s father, now managed by Calvin Norstad.
Production flow
Raw material (titanium / aluminum) → Cutoff → Multi-axis CNC turning → Multi-vise CNC milling → Deburring (vibratory machines) → Inspection → Anodizing
(subcontractor) → Finished goods inventory → Shipping on order
Workshop organization
Two distinct zones: turning and milling. Between the two, a conventional lathe and mill for internal tooling and personal projects. Multi-vise per machine for batch machining (setup time reduction). Part drawings attached to each machine with magnetic clips. 3D validation (Prusa printing) before any production run. Vibratory machines for systematic deburring.
Production management analysis
Mixed production: order-based + finished goods inventory (many standardized references for frame builders). Titanium raw material purchased opportunistically in bulk. Pragmatic decision: no finishing on non-functional surfaces = significant time savings. Strong specialization in a single segment = captive and loyal clientele.
Strengths
- “Parts for frame builders” niche = unique expertise and captive clientele
- Multi-vise per machine: setup time reduction
- 3D validation before production = zero rework on production runs
- No finishing on non-functional surfaces
Areas for improvement
- Russian/Chinese titanium dependency = geopolitical supply chain risk
- Underdeveloped visual PO management
Key takeaway
Specialization in a highly targeted customer segment (frame builders) allows developing very sharp expertise and strong loyalty. The niche protects from mass competition and justifies solid margins.
